I know I usually don't do reviews on movies, but this was too good to pass up. Last night, I saw the newest installment of the Batman movies, The Dark Knight. Let me just say that it was probably the best movie I have seen in a long, long time. For the past five years, every time I watched a movie, I'd pick the plot apart and anticipate everything. Additionally, I'd think about how they did all the effects and screenplay. With Dark Knight, all that internal dissection disappeared as I got deeper and deeper into it.

I wanted to do a post on a few things related to Penn State's network. The first concerns an upgrade to the network and the second concerns the iPhone/iPod Touch.

As most Penn State students know, we must connect to wi-fi on campus via VPN connection. Problems still plague this technique, as connection speeds are slow and VPN (in my opinion) is unreliable. The story broke a few months ago, but Penn State is testing new connection methods over on Services Road (close to the Blue Band Building). This new system only requires your Penn State Access Account Name (abc123@psu.edu) and your password. This eliminates the need for VPN completely and will make connecting easier. Devices that Penn State does not have VPN compatible software for (think cell phones or PDAs) will suddenly be able to access and surf the internet. This method should, in theory increase speed as the connection will connect directly through the internet, instead of being passed through VPN servers. I have asked ITS about the current status of this upgrade, but they weren't sure.

The second order of business also concerns using the Penn State wi-fi access points. Since the release of the first iPhone, and the subsequent release of the iPod Touch, people have been looking for ways to connect these innovative devices to Penn State. With the release of OS 2.0 for the iPhone and iPod Touch, support for Cisco VPN has been introduced. I sent ITS an email asking what the procedure for connecting to Penn State with these two devices was. They responded that they currently didn't know, but would know for sure in a few weeks. Knowing this, I turned to online forums dedicated to the iPod Touch. A Penn State user posted the following in response to my inquiry:

This is the first content post of my summary of the day's events at the DGI Cyber Security Conference and Expo. Click here for the overview post of the conference.

The third speaker was equally as interesting and entertaining as Mr. Chun's presentation. The third speaker was Rick Mellendick who is the Senior Architect of the Cyber Operations Lead at Bearing Point. His topic was detailing a proactive approach to develop a road map of cyber security. The title of the presentation was "Offensive Capabilities for Defensive Posturing."

Mr. Mellendick touched on the fact that security professionals must think outside the box when it comes to strategy. Now, in my opinion, that phrase is pretty overused, especially when it comes to the IT industry. He does, however, make a good point as our current security strategies are not sufficient enough to get the job done.

He makes the following assumptions about network security:

Happy Fourth of July everyone, and most importantly, Happy Birthday U.S.A. It's been a while since I posted a daily links type post, but there are a few things I wanted to share with you.

 1. First up are the top ten TED Talks. For those unaware of what I'm talking about, the TED Talks bring in incredibly smart and experienced people to speak about tons of subjects. The thing that sets these talks apart from other internet speeches and talk is that these speakers are incredible presenters. They know how to captivate and audience and make a really difficult subject really easy to understand. The video posted on this page gives pieces of the ten best TED Talks. It is definitely worthwhile to give this one video a look, I'm sure you'll want to check out some of the full length videos after you see this one.
 2. This video is a holographic representation of 3D Google Earth. It is incredibly cool, and is something every techie wants to have in their living room. Hopefully this technology will replace the standard LCD screen, keyboard and mouse. After, (in my opinion) too many years of monitors, keyboard and mice we are long due for a serious recalculation of our computing experiences.
 3. Lifehacker asked readers to comment on their favorite Windows maintenance tools. This post is a summary of the comments. I have used most of them and can say that they are fantastic.
 4. The Phoenix Mars Lander has indeed found ice on the surface of Mars. It seems as though the landing vehicle landed directly on top of settled dust which blew away once the lander arrived. They are going to place the ice sample in the robot's oven to run tests. This is the homepage of the Phoenix Mars Lander, and this is the relevant story to the baking of Mars' ice.
 5. The Bavarian Parliament has passed a law that permits Bavarian Police to place Trojans on suspect's and suspect's contacts computers. The article (which has been translated via Google Translation) details the whole story. This approach to fighting crime is new and certainly scary, especially since it is state sanctioned.
 6. Slashdot has an excellent interview with Lt. Colonel John Bircher, who is with U.S. Army Computer Network Operations (CNO)-Electronic Warfare (EW) Proponent's Futures Branch. Similar in scope to AFCYBER, this Army program is currently evaluating the need and repsonse for military action in the cyber warfare realm.
 7. Firefox 3 set a world record for the most number of downloads in a single day- with 8 million. Hit up the link for a cool interactive map that shows how many downloads there have been to date. At the time of this post, Firefox 3 had reached 30,391,042 downloads.
 8. An update for those who are looking for the rest of the DGI Conference on Cyber Security posts, I am working on it. I've been swamped with work and some other stuff, but I assure you that I'm working on it.

I wanted to give a follow up on a post I did about the need for a better Windows OS. I got re-interested in this topic when I read this New York Times article and this blog posting. I spent a great deal of the post talking about the recent advances in Apple's upcoming OS, Snow Leopard, but not a whole lot of time talking about the issue at hand. There are several things that I did not touch upon during that original posting. There are also articles and links I wanted to show you that have I have discovered.

Believe it or not, I like Windows. I can see the merits of using OS X or Linux, but let's face it, Windows is very useful and even more practical. Despite have the majority of marketshare, Windows is still teetering on the edge of disaster. Chatter on the internet suggests that Microsoft has a few things up it's sleeve to reinvent the traditional Operating System. This article discusses a secret, post-Windows OS that many high level MS employees are currently working on. The meat of this article comes as a quote from the Microsoft 2.0 website, which I found particularly interesting:

This is the second content post of my summary of the day's events at the DGI Cyber Security Conference and Expo. Click here for the overview post of the conference.

The next speaker was Samuel Chun who is the Director of Cyber Security Practice of the EDS Government Solutions. Mr. Chun was, in my opinion, one of the best speakers at the conference. His speech had information that was interesting to me, and he didn't put the crowd to sleep. He talked a little bit about EDS as a company. EDS, in his words, is truly a global company. They do work with governments in all the habitable continents in the world. This is pretty cool and very different than a lot of government defense contractors here in the U.S. that only do work with domestic clients.

Mr. Chun detailed the top five security challenges that EDS has been seeing as of late in global government. Before talking about the security challenges, he cleared up a few things, including definitions. There are many definitions for the term cyberspace. The one that was used for this presentation is "A domain characterized by the use of electronics and the electromagnetic spectrum to store, modify and exchange data via networked systems and associated physical infrastructures." He also spoke of the fact that the increase of globalization will lead to new threats and opportunities to public and private sectors in cyberspace.

I'll admit it. I spend a long time on the Internet each day reading about the latest gadgets and technology trends. Some could argue that I've spent too much time doing this, but in the field I plan to enter very shortly, I feel it is necessary. One of the more interesting things that I've been keeping track of over the past few weeks is the development of new Operating Systems. It was announced a few months ago that the new version of Windows (Windows 7) will debut a new kernel called WinMin- a completely rebuilt core operating system. Shortly thereafter, my hopes were dashed as it was announced that Windows 7 will instead be built off of the existing Windows Vista architecture. Such a rework would have been wonderful for performance, and a simple restructuring is always good for behemoth software applications.

The doors opened at 7:30 for conference attendees. I walked in, checked in and got a very official name badge with my name and organization affiliation (Penn State University) and also a program. I found a seat close to the front and grabbed a quick breakfast provided by DGI. I had some time to kill, so I talked to a few people about what they do and why they were attending the conference. The IRS had a huge contingent that all sat around me. I think they all were security/system architects for the IRS. After more waiting, the first session got underway.

On Wednesday June 25, 2008 I attended the Digital Government Institutes's (DGI) Cyber Security Conference & Expo. The event was held in the Polaris Room of the Ronald Regan Conference Center and World Trade Center building in Washington D.C. The day was packed solid from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm and featured eight different speakers talking about a variety of cyber security topics. Additionally, there was a networking session during the continental breakfast and the lunch breaks. Also in attendance were vendors from industry like Cisco, Deloitte, EDS, (ISC )2 and Unisys. For the posts following this introductory one, I will details sections of the conference. As I fill out my notes for each speaker with some resources I am still waiting on DGI from, I will post a new section. Check back here for updates on the conference.

To hold you over until I update the blog, here is the list of topics, speakers and their respective titles:
